How do we know (in Question 15 above) that Paul wasn't talking about a language he knew or had studied? 17. Study I Corinthians 14, verses 5 and 19. When the "gift of tongues" operates with the "interpretation of tongues" it serves the same purpose as the "gift of prophecy". NOTICE THE WORD 'EXCEPT' IN VERSE 5! In verse 19 Paul said in the church he would rather speak five words with his understanding [a language his mind understood] than 10,000 words in a tongue; however, if there is interpretation, then it serves the same as prophecy and is just as important as prophecy! Paul said, "I speak with tongues more than all of you" (verse 18). Tongues may be used in your private devotional life and in church worship: singing with the spirit (in tongues) and singing with the understanding (in your own language). Also, for giving of thanks in your private devotional life and in church worship. Verses 15 and 16 of 1 Corinthians show these usages in the church; and remember, Chapter 14 of 1 Corinthians is written to teach about order IN THE CHURCH. Outside the church you can pray in tongues as much as you want to: aloud or silently! Remember again, Paul said, "I speak with tongues more than all of you." There is a difference between "praying in tongues" (praying in the language of the spirit) and in the "gift of tongues". When you are praying in tongues, who will understand you? What scripture proves it? 1 Corinthians 14: 2 says you are speaking "secret truths" (mysteries) to God when you speak or pray in the Spirit. The word "mystery" [Greek: "musterion"] in the New Testament means "something that God reveals ... in a way and time chosen by Him." It is something known to the Spirit. This is consistent with Romans 8:26 where we are told that the Spirit " ... makes intercession for us because we know NOT what we should pray for as we ought". Romans 8:27 tells us that the Father God, who searches our hearts, knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit "makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God." When you speak in a tongue, you are speaking "mysteries" in the Spirit: NOT secret hidden wisdom ... NOT knowledge withheld; but you are speaking revealed truth! The Spirit is speaking TRUTH - a revelation - through you! Sometimes you may be able to discern a revelation of yourself, self-knowledge, as the Spirit prays through you. Many of the new-age and Eastern cults try to teach what is called "self-realization"; it is a deceptive work of demon spirits from Satan. If they would give their lives to Jesus Christ as the ONLY Master, then they could become baptized in the Holy Spirit and have a real knowledge of their inner selves. The Spirit may show you TRUTH about yourself. It may be a revelation of something in your past which needs healing, or it may be a revelation concerning something in the future. Jesus said, in John 16:13-14, that the Holy Spirit would guide you into all truth, that He would glorify Christ, and that He would take of the things of Christ and show them unto you. The Spirit will give you an "answer". He will provide you with a solution! He may give you a revelation of some weak area in your life which needs building up with the Word of God. The devil ... and sometimes your mind ... may be telling you that you are inferior, or that you can't do what God has called you to do. However, if you will pray much in tongues, the Spirit of God will clean that lie of the devil out of you and build you up in Christ! "He that speaks in tongues edifies (builds up) himself; but he that prophesies edifies the church" [I Corinthians 14:4]. You can't build up the church effectively until you are built up! Speaking in tongues and praying in tongues will drive away fear, doubt, and feelings of inferiority or insecurity! Fear is the opposite of faith. Satan works through fear; God works through faith! Pray in tongues much!! Praying in tongues will help you "break through" demonic "strongholds". It will help you get your prayers answered! 18. What are some extra benefits of this wonderful gift of God, the baptism in the Holy Spirit? 19. Jesus said, "Herein is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit" [John 15:8]. What is the fruit of a Christian? 20. Imagine that you are teaching someone about the gifts of the Spirit. List the nine (9) gifts of the Spirit and divide them into three (3) categories. 21. Why do these gifts operate through you? What do they enable you, or help you, to do? List four ways they help you: 22. Briefly describe each of the nine gifts and tell how it operates: 23. Which "gift" is often used in conjunction with the gift of miracles and the gift of healing? 24. Name four of the "gifts of the Spirit" which are often "dual" gifts (they may or may not operate through the same person) and match them with each other. 25. When "kinds of tongues" operates as a gift for a message to the church and there is NO "interpretation" of tongues, what should happen after three people have spoken in tongues (one after the other) in order, or turn? Note: If there has been interpretation, then the Spirit may choose to give another message to the Church. Follow the scriptural guidelines again as laid down in I Corinthians 14:27-28. This might happen several times, but if the interpretation does not follow, then let them keep silence. Note: The Spirit will NOT contradict the Word of God! 26. Does everyone who has received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit have the GIFT of tongues? Yes [ ] No [ ] 27. Does everyone who has received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit have the ability to PRAY in tongues? Yes [ ] No [ ] 28. What are some reasons for praying in the Spirit's language (in tongues)? 29. Why does PRAISE "break the yoke (or, chains)" of Satan and allow God to enter your situation and help you? 30. Is it selfish to want to edify, or build yourself up, by speaking in tongues? Yes [ ] No [ ] Why? Jude 20 says, "But you, beloved, build up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost." 31. Study again Lesson Plan 13, under the section "Pray According to God's Will". Describe three ways the Spirit helps you to do this. 32. What are some special talents or abilities a person may receive as a result of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? 33. Review Lesson Plan Eight, pray in tongues, and do what God tells you! About 30 years ago there were approximately 18 Christian television channels (not just programs, but whole channels, or stations). All of them them were"spirit-baptized" corporations. That is, the people who either owned, controlled, or managed them were baptized in the Holy Spirit. There were, at that same time, many other Christian churches and organizations who would have loved to have their own television channel, or station ... many of whom had the money to effect a purchase. However, they could not. Only the people who knew how to PRAY IN TONGUES and break through the "stronghold" of Satan were able to capture and use the air waves for Christ and be PIONEERS in the frontier of that media!
